Mel Brooks announces Spaceballs 2 with original cast members returning
Prepare to feel the power of the schwartz all over again because Spaceballs 2 is powering toward the big screen. Mel Brooks’s oft-mooted sequel to his 1987 sci-fi comedy Spaceballs is now a reality says The Hollywood Reporter, and the movie, distributed by Amazon-MGM, is recruiting several original cast members.
‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film’ is the description – a classic, satirical Mel Brooks pitch. Bill Pullman is reprising his role as space trucker Lone Starr and Rick Moranis is leaving retirement to once again play the villainous Dark Helmet.
Released to a middling reception, Spaceballs has attained a devoted cult following. It took a gleeful swipe at George Lucas’s Star Wars mythology some four years after the original trilogy concluded with Return of the Jedi in 1983.
The plot centres around Lone Starr and his human-dog sidekick Barf (the late John Candy). When they rescue Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of Druidia and her droid, Dot Matrix (Lorene Yarnell, voiced by Joan Rivers), they become embroiled in a plot led by the Spaceballs. Leader President Skroob (Brooks) wants to use Vespa as ransom to obtain Druidia’s air for their own planet.
Rick Moranis’s scene-stealing Darth Vader spoof Dark Helmet has long been a fan-favourite and claims several of the original film’s best lines (“I see your schwartz is as big as mine”). The actor has long resisted studio attempts to get him back to the Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchises. However, he’s now capitulated.
Actor Lewis Pullman, recently seen in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, will be joining his father, Bill. Keke Palmer (Nope; One of Them Days) has reportedly been cast in an undisclosed role.
Director Josh Greenbaum (Will and Harper; Strays) will work from a script by Josh Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody are producing the Spaceballs sequel alongside Gad, Brooks and Greenbaum. Brooks will produce and reprise his role as Yoda spin-off Yoghurt.
