Remarkably Bright Creatures Trailer Arrives From Netflix

Netflix has released the trailer for Remarkably Bright Creatures, starring Sally Field and Lewis Pullman, and you can watch it here.
Directed by Olivia Newman (Where the Crawdads Sing), the film is based on Shelby Van Pelt’s phenomenal debut novel and explores grief, friendship, and connection. Released in 2022, the book has remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over 65 weeks and has sold over 3.5 million copies to date.
The film follows a widow called Tova, who works at a local aquarium, who finds joy again when she forms an unlikely bond with a Giant Pacific Octopus and a wayward young man named Cameron, who comes to town in search of family. Together, they will uncover a mystery that will lead them to a life-changing discovery and restore their sense of wonder.
Readers of the book will know that the book is narrated by Marcellus the Octopus, voiced by Alfred Molina, who reminds us that “occasionally, humans can be remarkably bright creatures”. Van Pelt told Netflix that the idea for Marcellus came from falling down a Youtube rabbit-hole “One of the places where I was able to find a really good character was on YouTube, watching videos of naughty octopuses that were escaping from their enclosures, or just getting up to antics in aquariums,” she says. “I remember thinking that would be such a fun voice to write, such a fun character to harness. The character of Marcellus came out of a little vignette that I wrote in a continuing education class.”
Van Pelt chose to ground the story in the real world, with Tova being inspired by her own maternal grandmother and Cameron being inspired by true events from her own life. “Beyond Marcellus, Remarkably Bright Creatures is a story of love and grief,” Van Pelt says. “Those are two emotions that everyone who walks this planet feels at some point, so the themes are very widely resonant. There’s just a wide range of ages and generations and characters that people can enjoy together.”
Remarkably Bright Creatures arrives on Netflix on May 8th .
