Olivia Holt Set To Return For Heart Eyes 2

A woman looks concerned in Heart Eyes

The killer romance of Heart Eyes is far from over as Olivia Holt is in talks to reprise her role as Ally McCabe in the upcoming sequel to the Valentineโ€™s Day slasher, with Mason Gooding also expected to return as Jay Simmonds, her on-screen love interest, following earlier reports in February.

Writer-director Josh Ruben is returning for the sequel, with the script reportedly being finished.

When asked if he could see himself directing a sequel to Heart Eyes in an interview with Variety last year, Ruben shared “Iโ€™ll put it this way: You could replicate the structure of any great rom-com, from โ€œHis Girl Fridayโ€ to โ€œDefending Your Life,โ€ and you could drop Heart Eyes into the centre of that story, and have him flash and slash about. Thatโ€™s whatโ€™s exciting about this: Thereโ€™s an opportunity that we could have whoever the filmmaker was – certainly, Iโ€™d be interested – genuinely trying to create or replicate that rom-com, or the feelingย of a โ€œBridget Jonesโ€ or โ€œLove Actuallyโ€ or what have you, but actually have those people terrified by this psychopathic killer. “

Adding “Thatโ€™s really, really exciting, because what it means is it has a potential for a long life. Then the trick becomes: How can we balance all of the fun new toys and gore with a story about two people falling in love, or even on the outs, that you actually care about emotionally? Thatโ€™s the real success of this film. If itโ€™s landing with anyone, itโ€™s landing because these two have chemistry, and really, the whole ensemble does. Thatโ€™s going to be the trick. If you donโ€™t have that, I think youโ€™re dead in the water.’

The first film follows a masked maniac with glowing, red eyes who returns every Valentine’s Day to slaughter unsuspecting couples. But when a cynical ad executive and her hopelessly romantic colleague become the next target, they decide to fight back and end the reign of terror. The film opened to generally positive reviews, being praised for being a fun, but self-aware blend of a romantic comedy and slasher film, holding 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Heart Eyes is out now on home entertainment formats, and streaming on Paramount+ and NOW.
