Angelina Jolie‘s First They Killed My Father Khmer Rouge drama has released its official trailer thanks to Netflix. The movie has caused quite a stir when casting its actors especially those of the children however this is a drama based around one of Cambodia’s darkest era. A daughter of Cambodia remembers so the world may never forget
The trailer delivers a taster of the harrowing journey Ung that saw her eventually transformed into a child soldier. The tone is terrifying and things, even more, haunting thanks to the trailer having no or very little dialogue. They say ‘a Picture paints a thousand words’ is a very positive slogan, you could also say it’s one that can be equally negative. The concern is will this movie focus too much on the suffering rather than input a story which could be bad for the movie. Jolie is no stranger to suffering and pain with The Land Of Blood And Honey (Bosnian Civil War) and Unbroken (American prisoner of war by the Japanese). Hopefully, the experience from that movie will help her deliver the good for this one.
Directed by Angelina Jolie, First They Killed My Father is the adaptation of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung’s gripping memoir of surviving the deadly Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1978. The story is told through her eyes, from the age of five, when the Khmer Rouge came to power, to nine years old. The film depicts the indomitable spirit and devotion of Loung and her family as they struggle to stay together during the Khmer Rouge years.
First They Killed My Father will premiere at Toronto Film Festival next month before heading to Netflix where it will be released globally including UK & Ireland from 15th September.
