2016 seems to be the year to discover Old Hollywood or as some folks call ‘The Golden Age’ of Hollywood with Coen Brothers Hail Caesar! and Woody Allen‘s Cafe Society. Warren Beatty‘s Rules Don’t Apply makes a threesome and in the film’s second UK trailer,we see the relationship develop between Marla (Lily Collins) and Frank (Alden Ehrenreich), get a peek at Warren Beatty’s portrayal of Howard Hughes and learn more about why the rules don’t apply…
It’s 18 years since Beatty was in the director’s chair and hell of alot has changed since then, even in the ways films are made and promoted. He maybe older but it looks like he’s wiser playing the eccentric entrepreneur Howard Hughes, more at ease in a comedic role. Whilst this trailer might show alot of Hughes it’s also alot of focus on Marla and conflict of interest with Hughes.
In Rules Don’t Apply we meet an aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty) whom they work for.
It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes’ behaviour intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.
Rules Don’t Apply features a stellar cast which includes Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Lily Collins, Steve Coogan, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Megan Hilty, Oliver Platt and Martin Sheen.
We still don’t have a confirmed UK&Irish release date but the American release 23rd November, with 2 trailers already released we won’t be surprised if there similar release dates.
