Lee Cronin Wants To Do A Nightmare on Elm Street Reboot
The Mummy & Evil Dead Rise filmmaker wants to bring Freddy Krueger back.
It’s been shared that horror filmmaker Lee Cronin is eyeing a second remake of genre maestro Wes Craven’s iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street as a new addition to his filmography. The original film was released in 1984 as Craven’s sixth feature release, starring Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, and Ronee Blakley, with Robert Englund appearing as the horror villain Freddy Krueger. The film was also Johnny Depp’s debut work.
The Irish director is no stranger to reworkings of classic horror material and characters, having just released his re-imagining of the Universal classic Mummy franchise with Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, as well as being credited for reviving Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise with Evil Dead Rise. Now he’s sharing his goals of remaking one of American horror’s most signature, recognised works.
“I would find it very hard not to have a swing at ol’ Freddy Krueger, because he haunted my nightmares throughout my entire childhood and still pops up about four times a year,” the filmmaker told Variety, in addition to sharing a Lord of the Rings feature is another goal project as he would “drop everything for an opportunity to play around in Middle-earth.”
He also stated his estimate for what his upcoming projects will fit into as part of a bigger universe.”I actually think it’s unlikely that my next movie will be franchise adjacent,” Cronin concluded. “...That’s something that feels important to me right now.”
Cronin is also the executive producer on the upcoming sequels Evil Dead Burn and Evil Dead Wrath.
The original A Nightmare on Elm Street film focused on a group of teenagers who are terrorised and murdered in their dreams by the maniacal Freddy Krueger, characterised by his metal-clawed gloves, burned appearance, red striped jumper, brown fedora, and horrifically taunting nature. In the film, Krueger’s backstory is a job as a janitor at the same high school the main teens attend when their parents were students. Once it’s exposed as a child murderer, he’s burned alive by justice-seeking parents, and so has returned to terrorise their children in their dreams.
The film spawned a majorly significant franchise with seven sequels (including a spin-off, crossover film with Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees) and was first remade in 2010 by Samuel Bayer in his directorial debut.
