Karen Gillan, Josh Hutcherson, Clive Owen to star in horror Blasphemous
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Marvel star Karen Gillian,ย Josh Hutcherson and Children of Menโs Clive Owen have all signed on to star in the upcoming supernatural thriller Blasphemous.
The film will see Hellraiser and She Rides Shotgun screenwriter Luke Pitotrowski transition into the directorโs chair in a chilling, ghostly debut.
It’s been confirmed Pitotrowskiโs Blasphemous will see worldwide sales at the European Film Market located in Berlin. Production companies behind the picture reportedly include John Wickโs Thunder Road as well as Seven Bucks Productions.
In a story described as โa mix of The Exorcist and Trainingโ, Hutcherson will play โa rookie priestโ with Owen appearing as โhis devout mentorโ. The pair must โtransportโ Gillian who is a โpossessed young woman to a secure location for an exorcism. All hell breaks loose when she unexpectedly escapes, putting their lives on the line and their faith to the ultimate test.โ
Former Sony executive Scott Strauss has stated the script, which Pitotrowski also wrote himself, is โone of the best the collective producer group has ever readโ.
He added: โItโs a one-of-a-kind genre ride that features sharp dialogue, compelling characters, and powerful ideas.โ
This release will see Gillan return to the horror genre following Mike Flanagan’s 2013 supernatural/psychological shake-up Oculus as well as Hutcherson keeping up the horror momentum after the two film adaptations of the classic Five Nights at Freddyโs video games.
Owen has previously appeared in 2011โs supernatural horror Intruders, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
