Jeremy Strong Being Eyed To Play Mark Zuckerberg In Social Network Sequel
David Fincher’s Oscar-winning The Social Network was less Fight Club than Type Club: an urgent, pulsating, slice-of-life drama about the turn of the century digital revolution. Scripted to within an inch of its life by Aaron Sorkin (one of the film’s Oscar winners), it showcased an eerily good Jesse Eisenberg as controversial tech entrepreneur and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
After years of stalling, The Social Network – Part II now seems to be going ahead with Sorkin set to write and direct. A recent Deadline report suggests that Succession‘s Jeremy Strong could be in line to portray the now minted and influential Meta CEO.
Strong recently portrayed the vampiric Roy Cohn, the mentor to Donald Trump, in The Apprentice, which could be a bellwether as to where a Zuckerberg portrayal would go.
Deadline also reports that Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison is Sorkin’s top choice for the lead role, along with The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White (soon to be playing Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere).
The casting isn’t officially confirmed, and distributor Sony Pictures is remaining silent on the issue. News of Sorkin’s involvement in the Social Network sequel first emerged in June as Sorkin was confirmed to be collaborating with Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser.
Script details are being kept under wraps. However, it’s said that the new film will delve into the Wall Street Journal article ‘The Facebook Files”, written by Jeff Horwitz. Released in October 2021, the article acted as a damning indictment of Facebook’s working practices.
Sorkin said he was inspired to write the sequel following his horror over the January 6th, 2021, Capitol Building riots. In a 2024 interview, Sorkin said he believed Facebook had played a key role in the violence that unfolded.
It’s unclear who Madison or White will be playing, should their casting be confirmed. One imagines that White will be playing Horwitz and Madison, the Facebook whistleblower.
