James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Villain Confirmed
TheWrap has exclusively revealed that Superman and Lex Luthor will team up against popular DC villain Brainiac in the upcoming DCU release Man of Tomorrow.
With a rivalry as deep as theirs (and as all-consuming as Luthor’s), it would take something significant to get the duo to work together. As a result, many fans have suspected that Brainiac would be the film’s eventual foe, given the film’s likely plot involves a temporary alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor since the film was first announced. There was even a hint of a potential team-up during one of the climactic scenes in Superman, when David Corenswet’s Man of Steel tells Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor that he hopes “for the sake of the world” that Luthor uses his own humanity for good.
This possibility was addressed by James Gunn in a press conference for the finale of Peacemaker Season 2. When asked what kind of threat could get Lex to team up with his greatest enemy, Gunn answered by saying, “A pretty pronounced one”. Before adding “Lex Luthor is mostly concerned about Lex Luthor,” Gunn said. “So we’ll see what threatens Lex Luthor”. Gunn has also teased Brainiac as the film’s villain when he posted the front page of the screenplay for Man of Tomorrow, with an image of a human skull with an exposed brain present on the front cover.
The film is due to be released into cinemas on the 9th July 2027, with production on the film set to begin in Atlanta next April. It is also expected to include the likes of Frank Grillo, Isabella Merced, Rachel Brosnahan, Milly Alcock, and more in the wider ensemble cast.
