James Gunn gives update on The Batman II

James Gunn has denied the rumour that the scirpt for the hotly anticipated The Batman sequel was set to be handed in on the 23rd of June, as was reported by Puck.

Gunn took to Threads to respond to a fan that asking about the script, reiterating that it is in fact not going to be handed in on the 23rd of June. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly he was asked about the state of the film and said that a script is supposed to arrive by the end of June. In that interview he did implore fans to have patience with writer/director Matt Reeves, saying that they will “let the guy write the script in the amount of time he needs to write it”.

According to IMDb, Matt Reeves is currently involved in 8 upcoming projects as a producer, including another Batman adjacent project, Clayface,ย which recently casted its lead actor and has been slated for September 2026. In the time sinceย The Batman,ย he has also had a hand in the production of Batman: Caped Crusader and The Penguin, the latter being set in the same universe as The Batman and the upcoming sequel. It is unknown yet whether Clayface will also be aligned with Matt Reeves’ Gotham City universe, with details of both Clayface and The Batman Part II being kept under wraps by everyone involved.

The Batman Part IIย was recently delayed to October 2027, with only Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright known to be returning so far. Robert Pattinson is involved in two other hotly anticipated films, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and another Warner Bros. production in the form ofย Dune: Messiah.ย During a press tour forย Mickey 17, Pattinson joked about being “f-ing old” for the sequel by the time it was ready, so he clearly feels the fans frustration about the gap between the 2022 film and its sequel.

There is plenty to look forward to for fans of DC in the meantime, with the James Gunn directed Superman releasing on July 11th 2025 and a new season of Peacemaker arriving on August 21st 2025. Beyond this year, there is Supergirl which is slated for June 26th 2026, as well as the aforementioned Clayface, which has a release date September 11th 2026.

If you cannot wait to jump back into Matt Reeves’ Gotham City, The Batman and The Penguin are both available to stream on NOW TV in the UK.
