Interview: Director Elliot Tuttle And Actor Kieron Moore On Blue Film

This decade has seen a wave of new directors breaking into the spotlight with provocative dramas; some earn the right to display their transgressions, others do not. Elliot Tuttle’s Blue Film, which falls into a more positive light, faced a wave of film festival rejections before finally landing a premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2025. It is a queer chamber piece centred on uncovered truths, taking on a dark, conversational twist whilst confining itself to reflection in a forcefully actualising manner.
For those unaware, the synopsis of the film is as follows: “Drawn by the promise of easy money and anonymous sex, queer Camboy Aaron Eagle (Kieron Moore) is shocked to discover a personal connection with the mysterious stranger (Reed Birney) who has paid for his company. Over the course of one night, the two men engage in a war of words and emotions as they wrestle with the impact of a tainted and shared past.”

In his interview below, director Elliot Tuttle wanted to make something transgressive because “I made it from a place of very little money and so I really felt as if I could make whatever I wanted. I make films because I have something that I want to see realised, and it doesn’t come from anything else besides that. And so knowing that I had very little money to make this and if it was bad, no one had to see it and I could do whatever I wanted. I didn’t have any kind of creative overhead. It seemed like a no-brainer.”
