Hugh Jackman Is Holding Onto Wolverine
"I'm 57. I'm doing it till I'm 90!" said the Aussie star...
Since originating the on-screen portrayal, Hugh Jackman has held on to Wolverine for 25 years, and he doesn’t plan on letting go any time soon.
Marvel is coming back into the spotlight with the releases of Spider-Man: A Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday just around the corner, and Jackman plans to use his charm to stay front and centre. He recently revealed that leaving the X-Men isn’t on the cards, and that he hopes when the time comes, his successor will have free rein over the character.
“I’m 57. I’m doing it till I’m 90,” he told Project Big Screen. Further, Jackman went on to confirm that he is “not going to say anything to whoever plays him” – finding that his version of Wolverine thrived with no direction and the ability to create from the ground up.
Jackman continued to talk about how he “learned a lot over the years. Of course, I’ve got my own take, but it must be melding in with me in some way. I hope someone just comes in and does whatever the f*ck they want and makes it their own.” This inspires hope and exploration for whoever next puts on the claws – but if our man of many talents has his way this may be a few sequels down the line.
Hugh Jackman is an Oscar nominee, more than capable in many disciplines and has brought an incredible level of success with his portrayal of Wolverine. Most recently, he starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and Wolverine, in a plot that set up the fundamental crisis for Doomsday.
Jackman has become an integral part of the X-Men, and if the higher-ups at Marvel Studios are clever, I’m sure they will allow him to reprise his role a couple more times before he calls it quits.
Hugh Jackman began his journey as Logan in X-Men and since then has followed through in X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The most recent grossed over $1 billion, making it the most successful R-rated film ever.
Jackman refuses to let his age define him, and his discovery and portrayal of Wolverine remain fresh, even a quarter of a decade later.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in cinemas on December 17th.
