Golden Globe winners: One Battle After Another and Timothée Chalamet triumph
Awards season kicks into high gear with the reveal of the Golden Globe winners. It was a big evening for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s critically acclaimed One Battle After Another, which walked away with the most prizes on the night: Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Teyana Taylor).
Of those wins, Supporting Actress is perhaps the most surprising. The bookies’ favourite is Amy Madigan for the horror movie Weapons – she recently won the Critics Choice award for Best Supporting Actress and her trajectory had been expected to continue here. That said, there are often deviations between Globes winners and eventual Oscar victors, so there’s every chance Madigan could clutch the statue won by Ruth Gordon for 1968 horror classic Rosemary’s Baby.
Anderson’s wins for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay are his first – until now, he’s only been nominated for one Golden Globe, Best Original Screenplay for 2022’s Licorice Pizza. Anderson and his film have popular and critical might behind them, and One Battle After Another is widely expected to sweep the forthcoming Academy Awards.
Timothée Chalamet cemented his superstar status with a Best Actor – Musical or Comedy win for Marty Supreme, the first of his career. Chalamet’s brave and physically committed turn as the contradictory and often loathsome table tennis huckster Marty has been universally lauded and he’s now the clear favourite for the Best Actor Oscar, vaulting above the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another.
Jessie Buckley continues her unstoppable charge with her Best Actress – Drama win for Hamnet. Buckley has enjoyed widespread acclaim for her turn as William Shakespeare’s emotionally tormented wife Agnes, and it’s expected that she will triumph again at the Oscars. Chloe Zhao‘s feted drama also won the award for Best Drama, putting it at the forefront of the Best Picture Oscar race.
Stellan Skarsgård won his first-ever Golden Globe for Joachim Trier’s well-received Sentimental Value. The actor delivers an engrossing turn as an egotistical yet ailing film director determined to translate his tortured family history, and his house, into cinematic art. Triumphing over the likes of One Battle After Another‘s Sean Penn, Skarsgård thanked his wife for her “brutal support”, adding: “I’m playing a father who is a bad father. My children have really taught me what a bad father is.”
Ryan Coogler‘s blues/vampire hybrid Sinners only won two awards: Best Popular and Box Office Achievement, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Goransson. It’s validation for an acclaimed movie that dominated the cultural conversation in 2025, although many had perhaps expected it to do better in top-line categories like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. “I just want to thank the audience for showing up,” Coogler said upon accepting the Box Office award.
Brazilian period thriller The Secret Agent also took home two awards: for best film not in the English language and for star Wagner Moura who won Best Actor in a drama, the first Brazilian actor to do so. The film is released in the UK on February 20th. Meanwhile, Rose Byrne snagged the Best Actress – Musical or Comedy award for the darkly irreverent If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (also due for UK release on February 20th).
Netflix‘s shattering miniseries Adolescence capitalised on its wave of acclaim and Emmy wins with further successes for actors Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. Like Sinners, the show was one of 2025’s biggest talking points and one can expect it to perform well at the forthcoming BAFTA TV awards.
All eyes are on the next steps in the 2026 awards race: the EE BAFTA nominations are announced on January 27th (check out the BAFTA longlist where One Battle After Another is leading), preceded by the Oscar nominations on January 22nd. The 2026 BAFTA ceremony takes place on February 22nd and the 98th Academy Awards on March 15th.
