Ryan Coogler Reveals Why He’s Rebooting The X-Files
In a recent interview with Variety, Sinners director Ryan Coogler opened up about why he chose to reboot the iconic TV series, The X-Files. Coogler is currently attached to executive produce and write the pilot for this new iteration of the show, as well as potentially stepping into directing duties.
Throughout his career, Coogler has made it well known that his motivations for picking certain projects have come from the connections some franchises have with his parents. For instance, the reason he signed on to Creed was because of his father’s love for the Rocky series. Now he is pursuing The X-Files due to his mother being a big fan of the original show.
While at a screening of Sinners at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Coogler said that, “like my relationship with Rocky with my dad, The X-Files is one of those things with my mom. My mom means the world to me – she’s actually here tonight – so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”
It has been rumoured for a while that Danielle Deadwyler (Till) has been attached to the project, but when asked about her involvement, Coogler said: “I can neither confirm nor deny”. The same response was given when questioned about the potential return of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
The original series, which followed Mulder and Scully as they investigated unsolved cases of paranormal phenomena, ran from 1993 to 2018, featured 218 episodes across 11 seasons, along with two feature films.
