A24 Unleashes Chilling New Trailer for Horror Film Undertone

A woman with headphones looks on in the dark in Undertone.

A24 has unveiled the first full trailer for Undertone, its upcoming horror film slated for release this March, and it’s already making waves for its chilling, sound-driven approach. The film marks the feature debut of writer-director Ian Tuason and promises a tense, atmospheric experience that leans heavily into psychological dread rather than traditional jump scares.

The story follows Evy, a paranormal podcast host who returns to her childhood home to care for her dying mother. Her already fragile emotional state is pushed further when she begins receiving anonymous audio recordings documenting disturbing events inside a stranger’s house. As Evy listens-  often replaying the clips in reverse or isolating hidden sounds- the recordings begin to bleed into her reality, blurring the line between investigation and obsession.

What sets Undertone apart is its commitment to audio as the primary storytelling tool. Much of the film unfolds through voices, static, whispers, and distorted soundscapes, creating an overwhelming sense of isolation. The trailer makes this clear, using minimal imagery and letting the sound design do most of the work. Even in its brief runtime, the footage manages to feel deeply unsettling, lingering in ways that are hard to shake.

The cast is led by Nina Kiri in a performance that appears both grounded and emotionally raw, anchoring the film as its tension steadily escalates. Surrounding voices and unseen characters add to the unease, reinforcing the idea that what we can’t see,  but can hear, may be the most terrifying element of all.

With its inventive premise and unnerving trailer, Undertone is shaping up to be a standout entry in A24’s growing horror catalogue. If the full film delivers on the promise of its audio-driven terror, audiences may want to think twice before pressing play – or turning the volume up.
