Explore Kane Parsons’ Backrooms In New Trailer
A24 has finally released the (UK) trailer for the anticipated horror film Backrooms, directed by newcomer Kane Parsons and written by Will Soodik and adapted from the infamous Creepypasta web phenomenon of the same name.
The film will star Children of Men’s Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sentimental Value’s Renate Reinsve, Creep’s Mark Duplass, Eye for an Eye’s Finn Bennett, Afraid’s Lukita Maxwell and Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City’s Avan Jogia in a story of “a therapist venturing into an otherworldly dimension in search of her missing patient.”
The supernatural horror film’s production is shared between North Road Films, 21 Laps Entertainment, Atomic Monster and Phobos, with Saw’s James Wan, Shawn Levy, Roberto Patino and Longlegs director Osgood Perkins appearing among the names of producers.
Parsons began his career as a YouTuber, creating his account in 2015 for meme and video game content before transitioning into short filmmaking. His series on the Backrooms began in late 2021 and now has 71 million views across its 23 episodes.
The film’s concept stems from an unnerving photo of a yellow-tinted empty room with a carpet circulated on 4chan between 2011 and 2018, with one user then upgrading the phenomenon into a creative story by writing:
“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in […] God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.”
Backrooms hits cinemas on the 29th May.
