Dolly Parton, Country Music Legend, Dies Aged 80

Dolly Parton, the legendary country singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, has died aged 80.

Parton’s death was announced by her family on Tuesday, 25th August. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Born in 1946 in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family in a one-room cabin before embarking on a career that would eventually make her one of the most recognisable entertainers in the world. She moved to Nashville shortly after graduating high school and began establishing herself as a songwriter before finding success as a performer.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Parton became synonymous with country music through songs including “Jolene”, “9 to 5”, “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You”. The latter would later become a global phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded her own version for The Bodyguard soundtrack.

Her influence extended well beyond music. Parton became a successful actress, starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5 and earning acclaim for her role in Steel Magnolias. She also founded Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park that became one of the region’s biggest tourist attractions.

Away from entertainment, Parton was celebrated for her philanthropy. Her Imagination Library initiative has provided millions of free books to children around the world, while she also donated $1 million towards COVID-19 vaccine research.

Parton continued working and pursuing new projects into her eighties, despite recent health difficulties. Just days before her death, she had spoken publicly about her health and her determination to continue working.

With her unmistakable voice, song-writing talent, wit and generosity, Parton leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond country music. For generations of fans, she was not simply a musical icon, but a symbol of resilience, kindness and authenticity.
