Box Office Report: Michael is officially the highest-grossing biopic ever
Meanwhile, Supergirl disappoints and Toy Story 5 charges onwards.

Recent box office reports have confirmed that Michael, Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic centred on the rising and solo career of pop icon Michael Jackson, has officially become the highest-grossing biopic ever made. Thanks to a new global box office gross of $977.4 million, $370 million domestically and $607 million internationally, Michael has beaten the previous title holder, Oppenheimer’s $975.8 million, as this weekend saw Fuqua’s film bag another $9.2 million globally.
Oppenheimer is the Christopher Nolan film starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped carry out the first nuclear weapon during WWII, drawing from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 biography American Prometheus.
Oppenheimer’s box gross was made from a domestic gross of $330 million and an international one of $645 million, meaning Michael has now topped the historical war drama by $1.6 million globally, $40 million domestically and $38 million.
Michael stars the King of Pop’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the titular role, as well as Nia Long, Coleman Domingo, Miles Teller and Juliano Valdi. It had previously beaten Bryan Singer’s 2018 film, Bohemian Rhapsody, for the highest-grossing musical biopic ever made, as well as beating it for biggest opening performance for a biopic in the UK.
Additional box office news includes Pixar’s latest Toy Story 5 remaining on top with another global gross of $159.1 million, pushing the total earnings to $585 million. The animated sequel centred on the lovable gang of toys also saw the best opening weekend box office gross of the franchise, thanks to initial earnings of $312 million.
Additionally, DC’s recently released Supergirl brought home $68 million globally at the box office, with international ticket sales coming to $30 million and domestic ones totalling to $38 million. This second installment to the new DCU was made from a budget of $170 million, meaning it fell short of making the $102 million needed to outshine its budget on its opening weekend.
Jackass: Best and Last was also released last weekend, and grossed $10.3million worldwide, with $8.4million in the US. Olivia Wilde’s The Invite – starring Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton – opened in 7 theatres and took in $379k, for a week-best $54,157 per screen average.
