Avatar 4 and 5: James Cameron Still Planning To Direct Future Instalments
With Avatar: Fire and Ash getting closer and closer to hitting cinemas, Director James Cameron has already begun talking about what’s next for the major franchise.
In a conversation with Empire Magazine, Cameron has revealed that he still plans to direct Avatar 4 and 5 despite the last sixteen years of his life already being devoted to the franchise. It has long been understood that he has a five-film vision for the franchise, following Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and it’s upcoming release in December. There had been some internet speculation that he might step away; however, he has now put those rumours to bed, telling Empire that “I mean, there’s no reason not to, I’m healthy, I’m good to go”. He later went on to caveat the statement by adding “I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that”.
When pressed further on who he would like to replace him if he did choose to walk away, Cameron said, “I had a great working relationship and I’m using this as an example, not as an answer, with Robert Rodriguez on Alita. He honoured what I had written. We worked very collaboratively”. Before going on to emphasise that he wants to be the one to complete the Avatar saga – “If I can, I’ll just do it”.
Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story of the escalating conflict on Pandora as Jake and Neytiri’s family encounter a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña and more. It’s due to release into UK cinemas on the 19th December.
