‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel Announced From ‘Past Lives’ Director Celine Song
‘We may be seeing more developments in the return of the romantic genre on screen as Collider has confirmed news about Oscar nominee Celine Song writing a sequel to the 1997 hit My Best Friend’s Wedding.ย At this stage, the project is only in early development with Song attached to write and not direct but it’s still positive news for fans of the original.
The original story followed Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, a pair of best friends who made a pact that they would get married if they were still single at 28. However, when Mulroneyโs character becomes engaged to another woman (Cameron Diaz), Roberts has just four days to stop the wedding. The feature was a box office hit, earning around $300 million worldwide.
There are lots of reasons to be optimistic about this news as Celine Song has got huge plaudits over the years for her written work. In 2023, Song was behind the massive hit Past Lives which follows two childhood friends over more than two decades of their lives as their paths intertwine. The film went on to receive Academy Award nominations for both Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. This year, Song has followed up her work on Past Lives with Materialists, a similar genre film starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, which is also getting lots of praise. With these two films, Song has now proven on numerous occasions she’s the right person to lead a project like this and we can’t wait to see the project develop.
We will provide more information about theย My Best Friendโs Wedding sequel when we have it!
