First Look At Peter Berg’s World War II Drama The Mosquito Bowl

The Sweeping World War II true story The Mosquito Bowl has taken a step closer to becoming reality with Netflix releasing a set of First Look Images…

The War drama is directed by Peter Berg who is no stranger to American Football, who gave us Friday Night Lights series a way back in 2006. 20 years on he’s returning to the sport and reuniting with Buzz Bissinger who wrote the book that series was inspired by. Now Bissinger’s 2022 book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II is th subject of this film.

Netflix describe the film –  Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America’s top college football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they’ll play in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history — a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.

The Mosquito Bowl stars Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård as Bob Baumann , Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich, Tom Francis as David Schreiner. The rest of cast include Brent Comer, Dominic Bogart, Jack Ingram, Ella Newton, Lola Bond, Stacy Clausen, Billy Smith, Steven Sammut, Blake Erickson, Claudia Ware , Pat McAfee plus  Peter Berg himself as The General.

Berg’s directing style  once could say suits this type of film. He’ll capture the intensity of  the men playing the sport, the reputation that came with them but also the horrors, the drama from World War II.

I’m not going to hide and say I know who these  men where and their involvement in the game. I’m from the part of the world the American love to call ‘soccer’, we call it by it’s proper name Football. I could probably name a few teams nothing more, the mix of the sport and war setting looks  great. Hopefully this will be Peter Berg back on form and you can watch The Mosquito Bowl on Netflix from 25th November.
