Here is it everyone, it is that time of the year ago where I am leading up to my favourite times of the year – Halloween and what better way to celebrate than to tell you about some of my favourite horror films to get you right in the mood for the season.
I thought I would kick things off with this fantastic gem of a film based on the 1979 stalk and slash horror film of the same name When A Stranger Calls. Camilla Belle stars as Jill Johnson, a young high school student who is preyed upon with mysterious and disturbing phone calls while at a babysitting job. With nowhere to run and little places to hide and with the phone calls becoming more and more disturbing she has to try and fight not only for her own life but for the kids she is babysitting.
This film has fast become one fo my all time favourite films, especially to watch around this time of year. I know many people will have grown up with 1979 original, but I am not one of those people. In fact, I have only ever seen the original once, despite owning the DVD.
I started watching my horror films for Halloween in September as I knew I had so many to watch I couldn’t possibly for them all into one month When thinking about which one to star with I instantly went to this one.
The creep factor is there throughout the entire film and the whole atmosphere is just tense and unsettling from the get go.
Usually, in these horror films, it follows a young girl in a creepy looking old house, where you would expect a situation like this to happen. However, in this film, she is in a more modern open layout house that ha windows looking out for all directions. This was even creepier as she is exposed to the world.
I just find that no matter how often I watch the film and no matter when I watch the film I am always on edge after it. It certainly has to be one of the best horror films I can say to kick off the Halloween season.
Even better I would recommend this film for those of you who are attempting to enter the horror genre but do not know where to start. This would be a great fit as even though it is pretty eerie and creepy it’s not gory or overly violent although there is a constant threat of violence.
There have been many films over the years following a similar plot line, all of which are also great films.
I can not recommend When A Stranger Calls enough to kick off or to add to your Halloween season and trust me. After you see it once it will be a permanent feature in you horror film list
