Edinburgh Film Festival have announced they will celebrate its landmark 70th Edition by showcasing the very best in filmmaking and talent from across the country. The Scottish titles will be part of the 2016 Festival programme, with an eclectic mix of features, shorts, documentaries, animations, and exclusive events.
As already announced two homegrown films will bookend the festival. The Opening Night Gala is the World Premiere of Jason Connery’s enthralling drama Tommy’s Honour, starring Peter Mullan and Jack Lowden as the Golf pioneering father/son duo Old Tom and Young Tommy Morris. The film not just highlight the birth of golf but also turbulent relationship Old Tom had with his son.
Gillies Mackinnon’s Whisky Galore!, featuring Gregor Fisher, James Cosmo Kevin Guthrie, and Eddie Izzard will close the Festival, with the films world premiere.
Other films will include Brian Cox‘s The Carer who (will be in attendance) for his acclaimed comedy , in which he stars alongside Anna Chancellor and Emilia Fox. He also stars in Brooding Western Forsaken which stars Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.
Scottish star Dougray Scott appears in the apocalyptic thriller The Rezort, the latest feature from director Steve Barker who’s previous films, Outpost and Outpost: The Black Sun, were filmed in Scotland. Braveheart star Angus Macfadyen, will bring his directorial debut Macbeth Unhinged to the Festival, ablack and white modern-day retelling of the Shakespearean tragedy.
Artistic Director Mark Adams said: “We are delighted to once again cast the spotlight on great Scottish talent at this year’s festival. It speaks so much about the breadth and variety of filmmakers, craftspeople and performers that our selection of projects featuring local talent shines so brightly.”
Director of Screen at Creative Scotland Natalie Usher said “EIFF is a key event in Scotland’s cultural calendar, offering audiences inspirational, world class cinema. With debut features like Graham Maley’s thriller PALE STAR and Mike Day’s breathtaking documentary THE ISLANDS AND THE WHALES, screening alongside Jason Connery’s powerfully moving TOMMY’S HONOUR and wickedly entertaining animation from the duo Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson, EIFF is recognising and celebrating the wealth and depth of home-grown filmmaking talent supported by Creative Scotland.”
The classic Scottish films will also find their place amongst the celebration of Scottish. Danny Boyle’s cult Trainspotting (which started filming the long awaited sequel in Edinburgh yesterday) will celebrate it’s 20th Anniversary. Highlander is 30 years old this year will mark the occasion with a world premiere screening of the newly 4K version which Clancy Brown will attend.

The 70th edition of Edinburgh Film Festival will have a massive selection of other Scottish films an eclectic mix of features, shorts, documentaries, animations, and exclusive events.
As Edinburgh Film Festival is our local film festival we hope to attend and bring you a selection of reviews from the festival’s 70th Programme. The full programme is due to be launched any time soon with the actual festival running from 15th until 26th June.
