Nicolas Cage Reacts To Axing Of Prime Video's 'Spider-Noir' Series

Amazon Prime Video recently announced that Spider-Noir will not be returning for a second season. The series features Nic Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator forced to grapple with a tragedy from his past as New York’s only superhero, Spider-Noir. Set in 1930s New York City, the series also stars Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson and Li Jun Li.

Speaking with Deadline over the weekend, Cage said: “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards.”

The series offered its audience a unique twist: you could choose to watch the series in black and white or colour. The black and white style is thought to be an homage to the film noir style, whereas the colour version enriches the details of the era: vintage cars, costumes, the makeup and styles.

Cage is a movie man, and this series marked his first ever TV role. It received rave reviews and hit a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It landed eleven Emmy Award nominations, and won five Creative Arts Emmy’s over the weekend, including cinematography, sound editing, VFX, stunt co-ordination and main title design.

Despite its positive reception, the cancellation is said to come as a result of a high budget and low viewership.

Earlier this year, Cage said that he and the producers had done what they had set out to achieve. He added that, whether a second season would happen or not, these episodes work on their own as a complete story.

Cage plays football coach and broadcaster John Madden in the David O. Russell-directed Madden film at Amazon, set for release on November 18. He will star in Adam Sigal’s post-apocalyptic thriller, Parish, with filming set to start in October.
