Will Frodo Return? What Elijah Wood has to say about The Hunt for Gollum
After more than a decade since The Hobbit trilogy wrapped up, the Middle-earth film series is bringing back members of its original cast for an all-new adventure.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to begin filming in May, with Andy Serkis both directing and returning as Gollum. Original trilogy writers Phillippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, are also back, alongside Peter Jackson, who joins the project this time as a producer. With Ian McKellen confirmed to return as Gandalf, the question now remains: will Elijah Wood also reprise his role in the next instalment?
“I can neither confirm nor deny. Listen, a wizard is to be trusted” Wood told Screenrant in response to a tease last year from castmate Ian McKellen. “Aside from any of that, I’m not really allowed to confirm”
While remaining elusive about his own involvement, Wood shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying “I’m really excited about the film. I think it really is a creative ‘getting the band back together’. A lot of the creative heads in the department are back and in that space again. Philippa [Boyens], I think, is co-writing it and producing it. It’s very much that core original group getting back together to tell this story that will feel like a really fun exploration of this character that we all love so much. And I’m just really excited.”
“I’m excited for Andy [Serkis] to direct it”, he added. “It feels unbelievably appropriate that he directs a film about his character that he has really made his own. I’m thrilled. It’ll be great. And I’m excited to see. I know their intention is to make other films in this universe. And that’s exciting, interesting to see where that goes, but very exciting.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum reportedly explores an untold chapter of Middle-earth, set between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, following Aragorn as he is tasked with tracking down Gollum to prevent Sauron from learning the Ring’s whereabouts. Promising to expand on the lore established by J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel and the previous films directed by Peter Jackson. The film is currently slated for a December 2027 release.
