A woman holds a torchlighlight in a darkroom in Marama

Colonialism and Māori heritage clash in Victorian England as a young woman searches for her identity in Mārama. Vertigo Releasing have just unearthed the film’s UK Trailer that looks impressive on many levels.

Every year we are bombarded with endless marketing for the so called big releases, however we always forget the smaller releases. Personally majority of the time that is a cardinal sin as these films end up being some of the best films of the years and always underseen.

Taratoa Stappard‘s taut film has caught the eye of many since it’s debut at Toronto Film Festival. The film’s atmosphere, the foreboding dread and a monster that’s more legacy than an actual creature.

This New Zealand film stars Ariāna Osborne, a young Māori woman who heads to Victorian Northern England. Who heads to work for a rich landowner  who  fetishes the Māori culture trapping the young woman who search for her  heritage and identity.

The film also stars Toby Stephens, Erroll Shand, Umi Myers, Jordan Mooney and Evelyn Towersey.

Synopsis | 1859. A young Māori woman, Mary Stevens (Ariāna Osborne), arrives in Whitby after a 73 day journey from New Zealand only to discover that the man she was to meet is dead.

Trapped without prospects in an unfamiliar, hostile environment Mary is obliged to accept work as a governess for Sir Nathaniel Cole (Toby Stephens), a local landowner with a vast fortune made as a South Seas whaler. But when Mary moves into Cole’s grand country house, she gradually discovers he is an obsessive, fetishistic collector of Māori cultural artefacts and she begins to uncover the full, horrific truth of her colonial heritage.

Written and directed by Taratoa Stappard; and starring Ariāna Osborne, Toby Stephens (Die Another Day, Black Sails), Erroll Shand (Evil Dead Burn), Umi Myers (Bob Marley: One Love) and introducing Evelyn Towersey.

Mārama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has played film festivals around the world including Sitges and Fantastic Fest.

Mārama will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from 11th December.
