Watch The UK Trailer For Mafia Epic The Traitor

Tomasso Buscetta may not be a name that sounds familiar he was the man who brought down the most powerful family in Italian mafia history. This week Marco Bellocchio‘s The Traitor will tell that story and today we have a look at the film’s UK Trailer.

This is a intriguing story and a film that Italy submitted as it’s entry to the Best Foreign film at the Oscars which as we know Parasite won. If you’re going to have a big film you need a big name and in Italian cinema there’s no one bigger than Pierfrancesco Favino (World War Z, Rush, Angels & Demons). He plays the real-life informant Tommaso Buscetta who helped to bring down the powerful Cosa Nostra Mafia family in the 1980s.

Our writer Freda Cooper caught the film a few weeks ago at Edinburgh Film Festival at Home. Myself reviewed the film on an episode of Outside Centre Podcast (listen to episode), Without saying too much on the film we both agreed the main court scene is astonishing and totally bonkers.

Based on the true story of the Cosa Nostra in the early 1980’s, the film begins as an all-out war rages between Sicilian mafia bosses over the heroin trade. Tommaso Buscetta (Favino), a made man, flees to hide out in Brazil. Back home, scores are being settled and Buscetta watches from afar as his sons and brother are killed in Palermo, knowing he may be next. Arrested and extradited to Italy by the Brazilian police, Buscetta makes a decision that will change everything for the Mafia: he decides to meet with Judge Giovanni Falcone and betray the eternal vow he made to the Cosa Nostra.

The film also co-stars Luigi Lo Cascio, Fausto Russo Alesi, and Maria Fernanda Cândido.

The Traitor will be released in UK and Irish Cinemas, as well as virtual theatrical screenings from Friday 24th July.
