Far From The Madding Crowd looks to be much more than your standard period, literary adaptation. The film, based on the novel by Thomas Hardy, and adapted for the screen by David Nicholls (One Day, Starter For 10), has talented Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) at the helm, and looks set to bring the brooding intensity of the book, and the romance and idyllic nature of Hardy’s home county, Dorset.

Far From The Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors:  Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor.  This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

In this first clip from the film, Bathsheba receives a visit from one of her suitors, Gabriel Oak.

Far From the Madding Crowd is released in the UK on 1st May.
