With a name such as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, there’s a sense of dread that this is some awful ‘British Comedy’ Starring Johnny Vegas. Think again!
In fact its the name of the upcoming movie for Four Weddings And A Funeral director Mike Newell, starring Lily James.
Lily James plays free-spirited journalist Juliet Ashton, who forms a life-changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII.

A bit of a mouthful to say and does tend to be referred to as Guernsey sometimes. The movie based on the best selling novel by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. History foretold that the Nazis and Literature or any form of culture didn’t mix. Unless you shared their views and ideologies if you enjoyed a read or wrote books you kept everything a secret, you simply flee. The movie title was a perfect name for the book club.
Newell seems to find the nice balance of drama and humour but Four Weddings was a long time ago, here’s hoping Guernsey will provide the director welcome return to the Four Weddings Success.
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society will be released in the UK and Ireland from 20th April. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one may turn out to be the Surprise movie at this month’s Glasgow Film Festival?!
The film also stars Glen Powell (Everybody Wants Some, Hidden Figures), Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game, Downton Abbey), Jessica Brown Findlay (Victor Frankenstein, Downton Abbey) and Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, The Boat That Rocked) with Tom Courtenay (45 Years, Doctor Zhivago) and Penelope Wilton (The BFG, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).
