Unquestionably, Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood’s top leading men. With three Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe win on his resume, Depp has given each role a unique twist, turning the characters he portrays into icons. In honour of The Lone Ranger being released in August, we’re looking back at Johnny Depp’s 10 best films of his career.

Cry-Baby (1990)

As one of Depp’s earliest films, Cry-Baby is the perfect introduction to a multi-talented movie star. Although not a box office smash, the film still gives us Depp as a leading bad boy with a soft side, enough to make any red-blooded girl swoon.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993)

This critically acclaimed heart-wrencher shows a softer side to Johnny. As Gilbert Grape, Depp portrays an overwhelmed older brother in small town Iowa trying to get through life and keep his family together.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

As one of 2010 highest grossing box office successes, Depp definitely did not disappoint in bringing the iconic character of the Mad Hatter to life. With his usual quirky flare, Depp entertained and thrilled millions while surrounded by a star-studded cast.

Ed Wood (1994)

This biopic of the life of Ed Wood allowed Depp to explore the life of one of Hollywood’s most notorious filmmakers. The film, packed with drama and laughs, was a critical hit despite the disappointing box office numbers.

Finding Neverland (2004)

As celebrated playwright J.M. Barrie, Depp dives into an emotional role, telling the story of how the tale of Peter Pan came about. Showing his diversity once again, Depp delivers an inspiring performance worthy of his second Oscar nomination.

Rango (2011)

In what some considered a surprising role, Johnny Depp voices the outspoken chameleon Rango. This animated adventure comedy was box office gold and also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film was directed by Gore Verbinski who, coincidentally, is directing The Lone Range starring Johnny Depp.

Pirates of the Caribbean (2003, 2006, 2007)

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise created what most would agree to be Depp’s most iconic role yet. As the lovable Jack Sparrow, Depp made what should have been a villain, the most loveable character of the franchise. Audiences cheered on the pillaging lifestyle of scallywag Captain Jack Sparrow, which also landed him his first Academy Award nomination.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

As the first, shall we say strange, character on Depp’s resume, Edward Scissorhands became the most unlikely love story of 1990. The movie showed that Depp wasn’t just another pretty face, and, of course, started the infamous relationship between him and Winona Ryder. Wino Forever right?

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

What do you get when you mix a vengeful barber, a crazed pie shop owner and upbeat melodies? Johnny Depp’s Golden Globe winning performance for Sweeney Todd of course. The mixture of a unique character, superb acting skills and vocal abilities to match was the perfect recipe to make audiences and critics alike cheer with joy.

The Lone Ranger (2013)

Tonto, the trusty sidekick to the Lone Ranger, is the next great character for Depp to immortalize. With wit and one-liners, Depp is sure to entertain audiences and critics in this summer’s biggest blockbuster.

The Lone Ranger is set to be released in UK cinemas August 9th.
