1. From Dusk Till Dawn
Quentin Tarantino is your quintessential cult director and out of all of his weird and wonderful cult offerings, From Dusk Till Dawn is one of his finest. This was the first movie Tarantino actually wrote himself, before teaming up with fellow cult director, Robert Rodriguez – creator of classics like Desperado and Machete Kills. George Clooney and Juliette Lewis star in this adventure/vampire thriller, filled – in true Tarantino style – with guts, gore and guffaws. The perfect introduction for anyone looking to get into cult movies, anyone who loves Tarantino, or anyone who yearns to see George Clooney being attacked by the undead.
2. Clueless
Don’t fool yourself into thinking Clueless is some kind of generic chick-flick – despite what the front cover of the DVD might suggest. Amy Heckerling has created a timeless teen movie, an indie classic, which has lost no less of its zest and character 20 years after its initial release. The film was initially conceived as a modern day adaptation of the classic Jane Austin novel Emma, but thanks to outstanding performances from Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd and Brittany Murphy, Clueless stands strongly in its own right, as it explores the narcissistic nature of high school social politics.
3. Rounders
There have been many films focussing on the world of gambling over the years, but Rounders has to be up there with the best of them. Edward Norton and Matt Damon were still building their burgeoning reputations back when this film was released in 1998 and they form a brilliant on screen partnership – playing best friends Mike and Worm, as their shared love of gambling lands them in some sticky situations. Poker lovers will appreciate the realism this movie brings – as it does nothing to glamorise the underground gambling scene – but there is plenty about this movie for anyone to enjoy, so you don’t have to be a card shark to log onto Netflix and give this movie a watch.
4. Pineapple Express
If you don’t like distasteful jokes, lots of swearing or drugs taking then this movie isn’t for you. If you do, then you simply have to get onto Netflix and spend an afternoon watching Pineapple Express. Superbad director Judd Apatow has created another comedy masterpiece, with the help of lead actor Seth Rogan – who teamed up with Evan Goldberg to put this insane storyline into writing. James Franco plays the role of troubled stoner Saul to perfection, forming a beautiful bromance between himself and Seth Rogan’s character, Dale. Danny McBride is outstanding in the supporting role of lovable rogue Red, as the storyline twists in several surprising and hilarious directions. Pineapple Express is a wonderful buddy movie, hysterically funny and a must-watch cult movie for anyone who is a fan of modern comedies.
5. Big Trouble in Little China
Legendary director John Carpenter has made many memorable movies over the decades, but Big Trouble in Little China is definitely one of his most underrated films. Kurt Russell plays the larger-than-life protagonist, Jack Burton to perfection, as he attempts to help a Chinese local rescue his fiancée from one of the country’s most infamous gangs. It’s a wonderful parody of action and kung fu films set in the 80s, with the charismatic and overly-macho Burton juxtaposing brilliantly with his diminutive sidekick. If you want a film with plenty of action and a whole lot of laughs, perfect for watching with friends on a boring afternoon, then give this cult classic a chance.
