After yesterday’s American trailer for Martin Scorsese‘s Silence, Studiocanal has finally unleashed the UK trailer, the epic tale of Jesuit missionaries to bring Christianity to 17th Century Japan. 26 years in the making but as you’ll see it looks worth the wait, check out the trailer…

Ahead of its premiere at The Vatican, we get our first glimpse of a Master Of Cinema at work. A passion project based on Japanese author Shūsaku Endō novel of the same. As we like to say all good things come to those who wait and we only have another 5 weeks to go.

Silence features Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver as young Jesuit Priests who are sent to Rural Japan to find out what happened to their mentor Father Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Nesson) who went missing. This is during the time of Kakure Kirishitan (“Hidden Christians”) which Ferreira was forced publically to renounce his faith.

Today’s new trailer follows up yesterday’s trailer showcasing the epic grandeur of the movie. From the start, we get a glimpse of the dangers of practising any religion in Japan is dangerous. Violence, persecution executions and in the trailer we get a glimpse to a Japanese practise if mizuharitsuke, or water crucifixion. This was a time much of the world was undiscovered and bringing religion to a foreign was a dangerous move.

This movie is a study of the director’s faith and at one time Scorsese was going to be a priest before he went to make movies. Religion is still an important part of his life and plays a significant in all if not most of his movies too.Previewing the movie at the Vatican and getting the approval will be important to him. This won’t be the first time a movie has got the blessing of the catholic church with Mel Gibson’s Passion Of Christ receiving approval from then Pope John Paul.

The visual aesthetic of Silence is stunning, the moments of silence and reflection leaves a haunting chill. The movie may not have had any Festival time, but this is a movie created by one of the greatest auteurs in the industry and pardon the expression we have ‘faith’ in him.

Silence is set for a 1st January 2017 UK&Irish cinematic release (USA 23rd December Limited, then full 2017).The movie also stars Ciaran Hinds, Shin’ya Tsukamoto.
