New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson has hinted at his next feature project after just over a decade-long hiatus following his adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy books The Hobbit,ย a prequel series to The Lord of the Rings. Jackson’s next film will be another adaptation, this time of a classic comic book series, and will be a long-awaited sequel to Steven Spielberg’s animated film, The Adventures of Tintin.

This is the adventure film featuring the voice work of Jamie Bell,ย Andy Serkisย andย Daniel Craig,ย with Steven Moffat,ย Edgar Wrightย andย Joe Cornish sharing writing credits for adapting the Hergรฉย comic series of the same name. The Adventures of Tintinย sees the titular character head off on a journey to find treasure aboard the Unicorn ship, accompanied by his loyal dog Snowy and his sea-capturing best friend Captain Haddock, who holds ancestral ties to the lost ship.

Spielberg’s film generated positive reviews due to its use of motion-capture animation and quality in adapting Hergรฉ’sย beloved characters for the big screen and other cinematic elements such as action sequences and score. The film grossed a worldwide total of $374 million from its initial budget of $135 million, and was the first motion-capture film to earn the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film.

A sequel was immediately planned yet has been stuck in development hell, with constant stallings and pushbacks. Jackson had promised to get going with the follow-up, hoping to include his personal favourite Tintin stories, includingย The Seven Crystal Balls,ย Prisoners of the Sun,ย The Black Island, andย The Calculus Affair; however, the sad passing of his collaborator, Andrew Lesnie, prompted the director to take a hiatus.

However, a recent sit-down has seen the King Kong director reveal that a follow-up to the 2011 adaptation of the European comic albums of the same name is “probably the next film that [he’d] actually direct,” having carried out production on the previous film with a plan to direct the sequel earlier.

The idea was that then I was supposed to go straight onto a second one, and we’d swap the roles, so I’d direct the second one, and [Spielberg would] produce it,” Jackson added. “It’s just taken 15 years to get there, unfortunately, a bit late. But it’s a timeless story.”

I think his death changed my creative path,” he shared in discussing Lesnie’s passing and his hiatus. “The result is that for 11 or 12 years, I haven’t made a drama film because that would require me to build a relationship with another DP.”

The filmmaker had previously confirmedย that he was working on theย script for the Tintin sequelย at this year’s Cannes.
