The Deep Blue Sea Starring Rachel Weisz & Tom Hiddleston to Close London Film Festival 2011

The Deep Blue Sea

With September knocking on the door it means we step even closer to UK’s premier International Film Festival, the 55Th BFI London Film Festival which takes place this year between October 17th – 27th. Last week it was announced Fernando Meirelles 360 will open this years fest and today BFI have annouced the closing film and I do hope everyone is an Rachel Weisz fan as she will also star in The Deep Blue Sea alongside Tom Huddleston and Simon Russell Beale with Terence Davies directing.

Set in post-war Britain, this deeply moving story is an adaptation ofย Terence Rattiganโ€™s classic play,ย The Deep Blue Seaย is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness. Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, what or whom should Hester choose?

Rachel Weisz is making a habit now of appearing in movies opening as well as closing film festivals as in September she will star Page Eight a British spy drama starring Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon and Ralph Fiennes a movie which aired on BBC 2 Sunday just past ย which is amazingly closing Toronto Film Festival which has now disappointed a few North American critics as its lost its exclusive appeal (though the movie did make it’s World Premier ย back in June at Edinburgh) a little. BFI have sent us a press release which i’ve embedded below, The Peoples Movies and Cinehouse are hoping to attend this years festival so stay tuned!

London โ€“30ย August: The 55th BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express, is proud to announce that this yearโ€™s Festival will close on Thursday 27ย October with the UK premiere ofย The Deep Blue Sea, adapted and directed by Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives) marking his return to fiction feature making following his much loved documentaryย Of Time and the City.ย The Deep Blue Seaย stars Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale.

Hester Collyer (Academy Award ยฎ winner Rachel Weisz) leads a privileged life in 1950s London as the beautiful wife of high court judge Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale). To the shock of those around her, she walks out on her marriage to move in with young ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), with whom she has fallen passionately in love.

Set in post-war Britain, this deeply moving story is an adaptation of Terence Rattiganโ€™s classic play,ย The Deep Blue Seaย is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness. Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, what โ€“ or whom โ€“ should Hester choose?

ย Sandra Hebron, the Festivalโ€™s Artistic Director comments: โ€œItโ€™s a great pleasure to be able to close the Festival with this exquisite new feature from one of our most cherished directors. Terence Davies is a film maker who the BFI has supported from the very beginnings of his career, and in Terence Rattiganโ€™s centenary year, this beautifully directed and acted film is the perfect closing night film.โ€

On having the film’s UK premiere at the Festival, producers Sean Oโ€™Connor and Kate Ogborn comment: โ€œWe are deeply honoured and hugely thrilled for The Deep Blue Sea to be screened as the Closing Night Gala at this year’s BFI London Film Festival. It’s very much a London-based film, so it feels just right for the film’s first UK outing to be at this wonderful festival.ย Itโ€™s a particular pleasure for us to introduce a new film by Terence Davis – returning to the period andย themes of his most celebrated work. All in all, for many reasons, it feels like coming home.”ย

Directorย Terence Daviesย adds: โ€œ”As a British filmmaker, to get into the BFI London Filmย Festivalย at all is bliss – to get a Closing Night film is sheer heaven!ย The Festival is now, rightly, seen as one of the major European and World Film Festivals; championing not only British but World cinema.”

The Deep Blue Sea opens in UK cinemas on 25thย November.

UK Film Council and Film4 in association with Protagonist Pictures, Lip Sync Productions and Artificial Eye present a Camberwell/ Fly Film Production.

Produced by Sean Oโ€™Connor and Kate Ogborn. Executive produced by Katherine Butler, Lisa Marie Russo, Peter Hampden and Norman Merry.
