Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) and Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) in Columbia Pictures’ THE SOCIAL RECKONING.

Hello, fellow Chroniclers! It’s time once again for your regular dose of film podcasting with Episode 69 of The Chronicle Film Podcast. This week, we’re going old school as Paul is joined by Clotilde Chinnici to take a deep dive into Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning.

Featuring a stellar cast including Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin and Bill Burr, The Social Reckoning is a companion piece to David Fincher’s masterful The Social Network, rather than a straightforward sequel. Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for the original film, returns to explore another chapter in the story of social media and its impact on society.

Inspired by the Facebook whistleblower revelations reported by The Wall Street Journal in 2021, the film follows Frances (Mikey Madison), a Facebook engineer working on the platform’s Civic Integrity team. When she discovers evidence suggesting that Facebook is prioritising profit over user safety, her concerns appear to fall on deaf ears.

Everything begins to change when Frances meets Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), an investigative journalist at The Wall Street Journal who is determined to uncover how the social media giant really operates.

During our discussion, we also mention the tragic case of Molly Russell, who died by suicide in 2017 at the age of 14. Molly’s death brought renewed attention to the potential harms of online content and the impact social media can have on young people.

If you would like to learn more about Molly’s story or find information and support, visit the Molly Rose Foundation website.

Join Paul and Clotilde as they discuss The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s exploration of Facebook, whistleblowing, corporate accountability and the responsibilities of social media platforms.
