This year we attended our first American film festival, Sundance Film Festival and the one film that created such a buzz was The Witch. The was January we’ve heard nothing much about it until now as A24 have unveiled the first bone-chillingly visceral trailer, just what a horror fan asked for…

There’s evil in the woods and Robert Egger‘s unsettling gothic horror is ready to deliver scares through dread and atmosphere. The Witch seems to vent a horror that has tone you could easily find in David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman meaning visually stylish too. Rarely do we see unique horror films and ones that can capture the ambiance and paranoia of Salem Witch Trials.

In The Witch a colonial family leaves plantation life and attempts to reap their harvest on a fledgling farm at the edge of an imposing ancient New England forest. Superstition and dread set in as food grows scarce, a family member goes missing, and the children’s play takes on a frenzied and menacing undercurrent. As they begin to turn on one another, the malevolent machinations of an ethereal presence from within the woods exacerbate the growing corruption of their own nature.

Eggers did win the Best Director Award for Sundance Film Festival and on the evidence of this trailer you can see why he’s been connected to recently announced Nosferatu remake. Read Andrew McArthur’s review here and Scott Clark’s review who reviewed it for Cinehouse calling it “Incredibly evocative filmmaking”

The Witch sadly still hasn’t got a UK or Irish distributor so no release date, however we expect a 2016 release like USA, but before that a gala at Toronto Film Festival. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Katie Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Lucas Dawson, and Ellie Grainger.
