Takashi Yamazaki Explains Godzilla Minus Zero R-Rating

Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki has discussed his upcoming film, Godzilla Minus Zero, earning an R-rating following the film’s debut at the New York Film Festival on Friday. Set as a sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, the film stars previous cast members Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Miou Tanaka, Sakura Ando, and Hidetaka Yoshioka and centres on the Shikishima family facing the threat of Godzilla’s wrath.

Jun Kunimura, Masami Nagasawa, and Min Tanaka also star in new roles.

Godzilla Minus Zero will be released under an R-rating due to violent content/bloody images and is generating additional buzz due to its status as the first film in the Godzilla franchise to receive this rating since the series’ debut in 1954 by director Ishirō Honda.

Its director discussed why this rating is important in a recent sit-down interview, viewing the certification “Logically, as a studio – and even as a director…”

“….you want as many people from the general public to be able to see your film,” Yamazaki explained. “So, an R-rating might seem like a barrier to entry, and conversations about, ‘Hey, could we have not gotten this down to PG-13?’ of course are going to happen.”

The filmmaker reflected on, “In spite of that, though, there were certain scenes that, for me as a director, were so essential to the film. Censoring it or cutting it was just not an option for me,” in addition to how such a rating previously “carried almost a negative connotation“.

However, “In more modern films,” including Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, seeing immense box office success despite holding the certificate, has opened R-rated features to “create a sort of expectation and excitement of, ‘Okay, well, they’re not censoring anything. The director and the cast’s voice is there, as is.’”

“So it is very encouraging to see other films that have preceded us that have already found a lot of success with the R-rating at the box office,” Yamazaki concluded. “Hopefully, we can continue that trend with Godzilla Minus Zero.”

Godzilla Minus Zero hits cinemas 6th November.
