Taiwan’s 2020 Biggest Box Office Hit Little Big Women Getting A Netflix Release
Many of us say we would love to experience great films from around world. As Bong Joon-Ho calls it ‘the 1 inch tall barrier of subtitles scares many of us to go to cinemas. Once you overcome that barrier the world ahead is wonderful, one of the many delights waiting is Joseph Chen-chieh Hsuโs Little Big Women.
As we enter this new year in Lockdown once again, our streaming service become source of entertainment, what better place overcome that ‘barrier’. Today Netflix announce they have won the global rights to Chen-chieh Hsuโs film.
The film was Taiwanโs highest-grossing box office film of 2020, winning several Golden Horse Awards (the country’s own Oscars). The film tells the story of a family struggles to come to terms with their estranged father’s passing and the life he had away from them.
Theย quoted his film’s themes would resonant globally, โthe overarching theme of Little Big Women is โthe process of gradually putting things to rest;โ I am confident that people from all corners of the world can empathize with issues involving life and death and the resentment and grudges that we experience.โ

Based on director Joseph Chen-chieh Hsuโs personal experience, Little Big Women tells the story of how a family grapples with and eventually accepts the fact that their recently deceased grandfather was having an affair, exploring how the grandmother overcomes this grudge and learns to accept the other woman. Diving into how a generation of women free themselves from the confines of traditional family values, the film shines a light on how people experience betrayal and pain and ultimately find reconciliation.
The film stars Chen Shu-fang, Hsieh Ying-xuan, Vivian Hsu, Sun Ke-fang, Janine Chang, Ding Ning, and Buffy Chen.
Little Big Women will be launched globally on Netflix including UK and Ireland from 5th February.
