Sunday Short Theatre – Winter’s Blight (2021)

Winter's Blight (2021)

Winters are cruel, some times too cruel for many. Things are tough and it breaks my heart that thanks to our current ‘government’ who pretend to help (reward you for being wealthy) frankly thrive on people struggling. Some of the worst hit will be the older folks and just keeping warm can be a struggle. In this week’s Sunday Short Theatre, Winter’s Blight an old man looking for wood gets an unlikely help.

This week’s film comes from New Zealand film maker Claire Campbell. The stop motion short took about 5 years to be made and it will easily warm you cockles.

The 14 minute short tells the tale of Bill (voiced by Mark Neilson) a lonely old man living a reclusive life in the forest. The winter this year very cold, harsh Bill must wonder out to gather wood. One Evergreen tree stands alone, as he starts to cut the tree, enthusiastic pine cone begs for Bill to stop.

There is a delightful charm to traditional styles of animation like stop motion. Giving the film heart, tenderness and with no dialogue there’s even a slice of emotion too…

In a clearing amongst a forest of pines lives a lonely old man who struggles to keep himself warm, though help comes from an unexpected friend.

Winter’s Blight is a stop motion short film made in Dunedin, New Zealand.
