Sunday Short Theatre – Steel Mother (2024)

Sunday Short Theatre choice this week, Steel Mother a woman turns from ‘prey’ to ‘predator’.

This week’s choice comes from Australian filmmaker Nik Kacevski who is no stranger to Sunday Short Theatre. Back in 2020, we chose his post apocalyptic short Soulmate forcing a young girl to do anything to survive. Steel Mother will take us back into the sci-fi genre with a mix of action that tip toes into a revenge thriller.

This one stars Laura Lakshmi, Shameer Birges, and Masha Basman. We follow Olivia a stripper who is pregnant and feels the wrath of  Victor, a merciless club owner. After a savage encounter, Olivia is awoken from a vulnerable woman to become an unstoppable force. Turning a fight for survival to seeking vengeance on those who attempt to exploit her. All thanks to the invincible force of maternal fury, and to protect her unborn daughter.

Much of that kineticism captured in Kacevski previous film is here. Gritty but visually powerful and fierce storytelling.
