Sunday Short Theatre – Wildbeest (2022)

Nature can be a wonderful thing, it can also be a very unpredictable thing. What if that dream holiday you desire is to venture into the wild say on a safari? In this week’s Sunday Short Theatre Wildbeest, a middle aged couple go that dream holiday that goes horribly wrong.

Working for a well known airline many of us a holiday to the Mediterranean to the likes of Spain, Greece or Turkey. The odd person over the Atlantic Ocean to U.S, for Troyer and Linda they love Elephants go to Africa for a Safari holiday. What starts as a perfect holiday, the couple get left behind with no sense of danger the both are in.

Belgium filmmakers Nicolas Keppens and Matthias Phlips 20 minute short mixes animation and live action. Going for 2D animation and using footage from a German Documentary like Bevis & Butthead meets David Attenborough. Already sounds a recipe for disaster, in reality a darkly comedic story. The couple are that couple or even family that go on holiday and all respect or rules go out the window. As they put their self interests in place, this puts them in danger, especially with wild animals that live in the Savannah.

You could many directions with this short. The filmmakers go for the comedic route with the couple continuing their ‘own safari’ despite the dangers. There is a degree of innocence in what they do as there clueless, just enjoying the holiday. This is charming, funny, touching little film with a brilliant little ending.
