Sunday Short Theatre – Watch Jannis Lenz’s Wannabe (2017)
I might be in my early 40’s I’ve grown up with technology, Social media’s grasp on society is unbelievable. The amount of young people especially looking for that affirmation on social media is terrifying. For this weeks Sunday Short Theatre, Jannis Lenz‘s Wannabe (2017), highlights this.
The film follows a young girl named Coco, and her desire and pursuit to be the next big thing on Youtube. A person looking for their five minutes of fame is nothing new, Social media stardom seems to be magnetic . There is a lot of young people out there who have made a career successfully, some making astronomical amounts of money. Some people think it will be an overnight thing, and I’ve seen many try and fail. Loosing friends, money, jobs, I even know of one person who sai I was still his friend but with him following myself online is damaging his reputation. That person five years on be lucky to have 2,000 followers, I have more but I appreciate in that amount.
Wannabe attempts not to ridicule those people or in this case Coco, it actually shows empathy towards her. Lenz does a solid job showcasing Coco’s aspirations are genuine. You see her stress, her emotions ripped to shreds when things don’t go her way. Anna Suk plays Coco, who does a fantastic job, making her judge herself constantly and even show her as ‘greedy’ when she gets her way.
As for the person I know myself and his other friends have told him to continue his channel but also get a job just in case you have to say goodbye to online career. The Peer pressure is there, I’m off to do a funny dance on Tiktok, enjoy!
As a crossmedia project, connecting film with the online video scene, WANNABE tells the story of a young YouTuber, who builds herself a fictitious world on the Internet.
