Sunday Short Theatre -This Time Away Starring Timothy Spall
Events and even Pandemics like Covid-19 put a lot of things into perspective. Film is one of those things, as we watch films of all genres we wonder should we watch or even review certain genres. In This week’s Sunday Short Theatre choice from Magali Barbé, This Time Away has lot’s of relevance.
The 14 minute film stars Timothy Spall and ties into isolation, loneliness. Many people worldwide especially older generation are lonely, sadly it’s an issue that was relevant pre-pandemic. We love to be nostalgic of what has gone, for many that could haunt many especially if they have lost a loved one. We are all used to routine and when your on your own, that routine is hard, emotional. Even if they do have someone else, not living with them.
This Time Away we meet Nigel(Spall), an elderly man living as a recluse, haunted by his past and memory of the family he once had… until an unexpected visitor arrives and disrupts his lonely routine.
A gorgeous tale of loneliness and routine with a profound science fiction feel to it…
Here’s the director’s statement on her film:
Growing as an adult is growing away from childhood and sometimes, family. Hardship, differing opinions, the different choices we make… With time and distance, life sometimes grows family apart. I often found myself struggling, trying to maintain those relationships and sometimes questioning their viability, foundations, substance… quality.
‘THIS TIME AWAY’ is my attempt to portray the complex relationship between a father and his daughter.
The loss of Nigel’s wife – Louise’s mother – challenges their relationship. He’s a man growing old, carrying his sorrow in loneliness and the comfort of nostalgia. She’s a young woman who despite her own pain, will eventually choose to move forward.
