If you loved Rian Johnson‘s indie neo-noir Brick this week’s Sunday Short Theatre choice will be right up your alley. Peter Edlund’s The New West is a classic revenge tale begins in a schoolyard and ends at the heart of the modern frontier.

The New West certainly takes big inspiration from Johnson’s cult indie hit, delivering a mish-mash of genres Western genre especially. In a recent email Edlund mentions his love for Westerns and it’s influence American culture, if your to compare this film to any other film, you could say its modern day Yojimbo.

The Western genre interested me because it’s so deeply ingrained in the American identity, both influencing and influenced by our culture and history. I wanted to take some of the Western’s iconic characters, themes, and plot devices, drop them in a modern setting, and explore how they have evolved and mutated in the intervening years.”

The New West is like the directors journey through the history of film, film’s harsh tone, a defined style delivering in an entertaining taut short film.
