Sunday Short Theatre – Julia Ducournau’s ‘Junior’

This week’s Sunday Short Theatre  has a big Cannes Film Festival connection. The 2021 festival recently finished with French filmmaker Julia Ducournau winning the Palme d’Or with Titane. That film marked her long awaited follow up to her critically acclaimed arthouse horror Raw which was released in 2016. Her latest film certainly has excited cinephiles and winning the big prize last weekend things got more exciting.

Now lets go back 10 years and go back to where it all started, with Junior. Ducornau’s 22 minute short is equally disturbing as our 2016 breakout film which also stars Garance Marillier who was the lead in Raw. She plays a 13 year old tomboy who is going through a metamorphosis process, enjoy…

Justine, nicknamed Junior, age thirteen, spots and a good sense of humor of her own, is a tomboy; slightly misogyne. While we diagnosed her a lightning gastroenteritis, junior’s body becomes the theater of a strange metamorphosis.

Titane will be released in the UK and Ireland by Altitude Films. They haven’t announced the the release date yet, if you live in the U.S.A Neon Pictures will release the film in October.
