Steven Spielberg's West Side Story Remake Gets First Trailer!

Steven Spielberg had a dream, he wanted to make a musical that dream will come true in time for Christmas. As 20th Century Studios release the Official First (Teaser) Trailer for West Side Story!

Thank you for those who followed our Twitter coverage of last night’s Oscar ceremony. I mentioned several trailers/TV Spots were aired during the ceremony in the U.S, this was one of them. It’s extremely difficult to recreate a musical on the big screen, when it’s Spielberg directing it will be epic. What could he do instead of an original idea? Remake a classic musical like West Side Story and fans of the 1961 original this trailer may give you goose bumps (and a big smile!).

Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler play our star crossed lovers Tony and Maria. Young love stuck in the middle of gang rivalry in 1950’s New York City between the Sharks and the Jets.

The trailer opens to the sounds of Leonard Bernstein’s song Somewhere with gang battle kicking off and that true love blossoming. Off course Arthur Laurents, and Stephen Sondheim are the other two behind the 1957 broadway musical which became a big hit on the cinema screens four years later. Fans of the original film will recognise the new version does have Rita Moreno who won a Oscar for her role as Anita. This time she plays Valentina with Ariana DeBose playing Anita.

Spielberg grew up listening to the Broadway music from a child. Music he grew up to so it was logical that the Musical feature he was going to (remake) would be ultimately be this one. Musical film adaptations are marmite, many work well others have great music but don’t transfer well to the big screen. This looks fantastic!

The rest of the cast includes David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James, Curtiss Cook. Along with Ana Isabelle, Ezra Menas, Ben Cook, Sean Harrison Jones, Patrick Higgins. Julius Anthony Rubio, Ricardo Zayas, Josh Andrés Rivera, Sebastian Serra and Carlos Sánchez Falú.
