Steven Spielberg is now a EGOT title holder
As one of American cinema’s most prolific, recognised and celebrated names, it should be no surprise to learn that director-and-producer Steven Spielberg’s list of accolades is ever-growing.
Following the 68th Grammy Awards held on 1st February this year, the Jaws director has achieved another historical win. His work as a producer for the Disney+ documentary Music by John Williams, a documentary on the legendary film composer John Williams known for E.T and Jurassic Park, among countless others, took home the Grammy Award for Best Music Film. This win can be added to the specific wins of four Emmys, a Tony, and three Oscars for Spielberg, channelling him into the status of a completed and accomplished EGOT holder.
The filmmaker’s Emmys were awarded for 1995’s A Pinky and the Brain Christmas for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less), 2001’s Band of Brothers for Outstanding Miniseries, 2002’s Taken for another Outstanding Miniseries award and 2010’s The Pacific for a third Outstanding Miniseries award.
His three Oscar wins come from a Best Picture and Best Director win for 1993’s Schindler’s List and a second Best Director win for 1998’s Saving Private Ryan.
His Tony win was for 2021’s A Strange Loop for Best Musical.
A fourth Academy Award may be on the horizon thanks to his producer credits on Chloé Zhao’s Oscar-nominated Hamnet.
“This acknowledgement is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable, and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled,” Spielberg shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “I am proud to be associated with Laurent’s beautiful film.”
Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, and Viola Davis are additional EGOT recipients.
Music by John Williams’ additional accolades include an Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program Emmy awarded to the sound editing team Dmitri Makarov, Tim Farrell, Richard Gould, and Ramiro Belgardt, Best Music Documentary at the 9th Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Documentary at the 61st Cinema Audio Society Award.
