Short Sunday Theatre – High Rider

Our minds sometimes wonder when going to work, fantasies about nothing or better life like in Bradley Tangonen‘s High Rider, this weeks Short Sunday Theatre.
High Rider ย we embark on a strange and beautiful fairytale adventure of a teenage girl who skateboards to work.A journey ย she meets a host of ย unique characters some are friendly some are not so friendly.
โI think skating and smoking both function as a means of escape,โ said Tagonen, the film is certainly a ‘trip’ one the girl (played by Nalani Ravelo) but its a journey into fantasy that’s also very grounded too. When I first laid my eyes on this film (probably the same as others) the description of the film dragged me in. It’s a rare treat when you watch something not for it’s genre but how the filmmaker describes the film so when you watch you feel as if you are on the journey too. It’s all building the excitement, your curiosity which Tangonen does High Rider making the whole experience compelling but fun one too.
Filmed in the lush surroundings of Hawaii the cinematography with score from apocalypse pop artist Jackson Scott reminds of something straight of Sofia Coppola or Spike Jonze film. Its Dream like catatonic state, simple story that focuses everything in between. You could say the film highlight’s America’s radical change of attitude towards marijuana and it’s recreational use, some states deciminalised the drug.
Whatever your stance on weed smoking, grab a set of headphones crank up the sound and enjoy High Rider for it’s visual and storytelling qualities.
