Richard Kelly Releasing Donnie Darko Sequel Book This Year
Richard Kelly, the director of the 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko, is releasing a sequel to the film in the form of a book.
The book, titled The Philosophy of Time Travel, is roughly 800 pages long and is set in the immediate aftermath of the original film, which ended in 1988. For those unaware, the synopsis of the 2001 film is as follows: “After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.” Darko is told that the world will end in exactly 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds.

The original film starred Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of Donnie Darko, alongside Jena Malone as Gretchen Ross, and James Duval as Frank, the sinister bunny rabbit that plagues Donnie’s visions. Additionally, in a reflection of reality, Maggie Gyllenhaal, the sister of Jake, plays Elizabeth Darko, Donnie’s sibling in the film.
Even though this sequel is only in the form of a book, Kelly hasn’t directed a film since 2009’s The Box. His only other project in between that and Donnie Darko was the extremely polarising, Dwayne Johnson-starring Southland Tales.
Speaking with Variety, Kelly said: “I’ve kept in touch with all the cast over the years,” He added that “I’m fairly certain they’re aware that I’ve been working on all this stuff, everything, and the sequel is so big that this book starts off in the 14 months after Donnie’s death, and then there is much more narrative material that I’ve been developing where the time jumps 28 years into the future, and there’s a lot of really exciting stuff that happens starting around 2015/2016 and onward after that, so that’s where I started with the sequel.”
