Prime Video Cancels Stargate Reboot Series
It has been confirmed that the remake series of Stargate has been cancelled by Prime Video. The project was expected to be written, produced and run by Canadian screenwriter Martin Gero, who had worked on the three previous series of the sci-fi franchise, Stargate: Atlantis, as well as executive-produced by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell.
Stargate is the multi-media sci-fi franchise by Amazon MGM Studios, springboarding off the original 1994 film of the same name by director Roland Emmerich, starring Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors. The film focused on a ring-shaped device called a Stargate, which creates a wormhole allowing travel through the universe and was followed by the series Stargate SG-1 as a sequel, led by creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner.
Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: Universe and the prequel web series Stargate Origins are additional additions to the franchise, as well as direct-to-DVD features Stargate: Children of the Gods, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, and Stargate: Continuum.
The revamp series was initially confirmed in November 2025, framed as a continuation of the original franchise, yet something hoping to attract a new audience. However, reports of the cancellation have implied that this exact ambition for the reboot is the reason for its drop, as the studio felt Gero’s vision was too fixed on appeasing the existing fanbase rather than updating the source material with some new perspectives.
Additionally, leadership changes at Amazon, including many execs who supported Gero’s vision for the project, leaving, are pinned as further reasons for the cancellation.
“The differences apparently ran so deep, they required an outright axing vs. retooling the existing version of the project by giving notes to Gero, a veteran showrunner who had been signed into an overall deal by Amazon MGM Studios for the purpose of him spearheading Stargate,” a Deadline source has stated.
